Golden Paste

This is absolutely not intended as medical advice, nor is it intended as a projection of scientific data or research. Rather, it is my musings on one of my favorite tools in my tool box. Hence (So), I want to share it with all of you.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the same family as ginger. It is known for its bright orange appearance and it

has many cooking applications, most notably, curries. It has the ability to stain almost any surface and when eaten alone it is quite objectionable. However, it does have health applications that I find most useful for my clients. Within turmeric there is a compound known as curcumin which is largely responsible for turmeric’s bright orange color. Curcumin is also well known for its fantastic anti-inflammatory properties.

This is why I get so excited. Rather than using a curcumin supplement in tablet form I have my clients make Golden Paste. Its taste is tolerable and can be eaten with or without meals. I am always pleased when my clients can take one less capsule or tablet. Golden Paste contains just four very simple ingredients.

  1. Organic turmeric powder

  2. Organic Black Pepper

  3. Virgin Coconut Oil

  4. Water

I always recommend the use of organic ingredients when preparing a supplement or a healing provision. In my opinion, it is simply safer. Also, I always use organic pepper when cooking or adding flavoring. Peppers are a very permeable plant, and in this case, I defer to the wisdom of my wonderful mentor, Bitten Jonsson, who would use nothing else. Although the black pepper is used here for flavor, it has an additional and more important purpose. Black pepper contains a molecule knows as piperine, which acts as a bio enhancer. Bio enhancers help other molecules to be absorbed more readily, as in this case, the curcumin. This is the importance of pepper in Golden Paste. When preparing the recipe, I grind my organic black pepper fresh. I cannot prove it works better, but it certainly does taste better!

Recipe:

1/2 Cup Turmeric Powder

2-3 tsp Black Pepper

1/3 Cup Coconut Oil, Melted

1 Cup Water

Method of Preparation:

  1. Bring the turmeric and water to a boil. Lower the heat to a simmer until a thick paste forms. Mix with a spatula.

  2. This takes five to ten minutes. I keep my pan mostly covered to prevent evaporation of the water.

  3. Turn off the heat.

  4. Allow liquid to cool down to a warm temperature and mix in the black pepper and melted coconut oil.

If refrigerated, Golden Paste will stay fresh for up to two weeks in a sealed container. You will know when it has turned as it will give off a sour aroma. You can also freeze the paste for later use.

I have had patients taking upwards of 1800-2400 mg of over the counter pain medications who were able to wean down to simply relying on Golden Paste for inflammatory pain relief. This has worked well for knee pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, and back pain as well as other pain issues. There have been reports of Golden Paste being a magical treatment for arthritic pain as well.

If you do not want to eat the paste you can add hot water (does not need to be boiling) and drink it as a soup. If you do not care for the taste or flavor, drink it quickly.
