The Importance of Self Talk

Don't be hard on yourself. The universe will do a good enough job with out your help!

I often hear my clients speaking negatively to themselves, down playing their successes and their skills. Belittling themselves, they are unable to acknowledge any of their accomplishments.

I always confront this behavior with, "Don't be so hard on yourself, you are only human! None of us are perfect!” I strongly believe we need to practice kindness to self. When I forget to do this, I often think of an old adage by Hillel that my parents would say to me, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” Today, I know and understand the meaning of that statement. So, the next time you catch yourself calling yourself fat or worthless, do your best to re-frame it.

You are not fat, you are feeling overweight. You are not stupid, you have more to learn. You do not have character defects, but opportunities for growth. Pay attention to the way you talk to yourself, it can have a huge impact on your outlook. You will find that when you do not constantly put yourself down, you will have a lot more space to love yourself and to offer that love to others when they need it the most.
